GitAtlas — Searchable Git Field Guide & DAG Engine
A searchable field guide to 381 Git & GitHub commands across 26 sections — instant multi-term AND search with smart risk detection ('Destroys work' / 'Rewrites history'), 17 guided recovery playbooks, interactive SVG Git DAG graph visualizer, 100% in-browser secret scanner, interactive Command Studio, and zero-install terminal CLI (npx gitatlas).
The Problem
Developers regularly encounter merge conflicts, rebase panics, and detached HEAD states, searching 'how do I undo a git commit' and navigating through conflicting StackOverflow threads with outdated flags, no plain-English explanations, and no safety warnings against destructive commands (like git push --force or git reset --hard) that can silently discard uncommitted work.
Architecture & Approach
Engineered a zero-build, ultra-fast developer reference containing 381 commands across 26 sections, automatically computing destructive and history-rewriting risks centrally via riskOf(). Augmented the reference with 17 step-by-step recovery playbooks, an interactive SVG Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) branch visualizer, an offline client-side secret scanner for API tokens/keys, a .gitignore and conventional commit studio, a zero-install CLI (npx gitatlas), and privacy-first Redis telemetry that converts missing searches into a community backlog.
Engineering Challenges & Solutions
- Building a responsive, interactive SVG DAG engine simulating Git branch merges, rebases, and cherry-picks with animated nodes and pointer linkages without third-party visualization libraries
- Automating destructive and history-rewriting risk detection centrally across 380+ commands to ensure safety warnings are consistent and maintainable
- Developing a zero-install CLI companion (npx gitatlas) capable of terminal error diagnostics and local .env credential scanning
- Designing privacy-first analytics using Upstash Redis with IP hashing, rate limiting, and an allowlist to prevent arbitrary leaderboard pollution while tracking genuine query misses
Outcome & Results
A live, high-performance reference tool with 381 commands, 80 copyable worked examples, 17 recovery playbooks, an interactive Git DAG sandbox, and an active developer following on GitHub and Vercel.
Lessons Learned
The best developer tools eliminate cognitive load during high-stress scenarios. Instant one-tap copy, plain-English context, keyboard-first navigation, and unambiguous risk tags transform a static cheat sheet into an indispensable production safety net.
